Networking & outreach

Many Zimbabwean jobs are filled through referrals before they're ever advertised. A clear elevator pitch and a few well-written messages put you on people's radar. Here's how — with samples you can adapt.

Your elevator pitch

An elevator pitch is a 20 to 30 second introduction of who you are and what you offer — for interviews, career fairs, or when someone asks "so what do you do?" A simple formula:

  • Who you are — your role or field.
  • What you're strong at — one or two proof points.
  • What you're looking for — the kind of role or opportunity.
"I'm a digital marketer with five years' experience growing brands online — most recently I drove a 40% jump in engagement for an NGO in Harare. I'm looking to bring those skills to a private-sector marketing team."

Keep it natural, practise it out loud, and tailor the last line to who you're speaking to.

Outreach that gets replies

Whether on LinkedIn or by email, keep messages short, specific and easy to say yes to. Personalise the opening, make one clear ask, and never attach your whole life story.

A few ground rules

  • Always ask permission before naming someone as a referee.
  • Give before you take — engage with people's posts, offer help where you can.
  • Follow up once, politely. Don't pester.
  • Keep it professional: no slang, check spelling, and address people respectfully.
